Potential effects of short-term heavy drinking

Even drinking to excess occasionally can have serious consequences. It impairs your judgment and can increase the likelihood of participating in risky behaviours that could result in injuries, accidents, unsafe sex, being a victim of a crime or getting into trouble with the police. Drinking very large amounts in one session can lead to acute alcohol poisoning, which in turn can result in unconsciousness, a coma, or even death.

alcohol affects women differently to men..

Alcohol affects women differently than men. Why?

  • Women are generally smaller.
  • Women generally have a lower percentage of natural body water than men (due to their higher average body fat levels), so there is less fluid for the alcohol to dissolve in. This means alcohol levels are more concentrated and women are likely to feel the effects sooner.
  • Women also produce less alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), the enzyme responsible for breaking down alcohol.
